CP KATE (Kate Rasmussen) is a contemporary sculptor whose work examines the relationship between cultural memory and historical significance. Pairing historical forms with the symbols, objects, and language of contemporary culture, Rasmussen questions the values societies choose to preserve. While history elevates monarchs, monuments, and artifacts, our identities are often shaped by far more ordinary things—consumer objects, language, rituals, and shared cultural experiences. Her sculptures inhabit the space between these worlds, where the absurd becomes a lens through which to reconsider what truly defines a culture.
Working in plaster using traditional mold-making and casting techniques, Rasmussen creates sculptures that are at once playful and contemplative. Humor provides the first point of entry into her work, but curiosity is its destination, inviting viewers to reconsider how cultural significance is constructed and what, ultimately, deserves to be remembered.
